I often come across some perplexing terms while browsing the internet for the latest in makeup trends. Baking, Strobing, and Clowning, to name a few terms that can leave you confused! While some are best left unexplored, others are worth taking a look into. So today, let’s delve into a technique known as ‘Baking’.

Baking gained major popularity after it was revealed that Kim Kardashian performed it all time. This technique, however, has been around for a long time and has been one of the best kept secrets of the drag community. Although it is a great way to highlight your face, we will focus on it as an under-eye concealing and highlighting method. This is ideally meant for people with an oily skin type.

Baking is essentially the process of using powder to set your concealer. Let the powder remain on your skin for 5-10 minutes where it “bakes” (helps to set the concealer in place with the help of the body heat generated). You then dust the excess powder off, and voila! – pore-less highlighted skin which doesn’t budge for hours.

Here’s a list of what you will need to do it yourself:

a) Medium to Heavy coverage concealer

b) Makeup wedge sponge (or any sponge will do)

c) A fluffy brush

d) Loose powder

Steps:

1. Have your foundation on before you proceed. Since there are a lot of layers being added to the skin and the eye area is dry/sensitive, it is advisable to apply some light eye cream. Use your finger to pat on your concealer, applying it in a V-shape under the eyes and extending towards the temples of your head.

2. Once the concealer has been applied, it is important to ensure that there are no lines visible (once set, you won’t be able to remove them). Take a damp sponge and pat the concealer to even out the lines.

3. Use a damp sponge to pick the loose powder (you can also use a powder that matches your skin-tone, however translucent seems to work best) and dab it on the under-eye area. Apply the powder generously on your skin, but make sure not to blend it out. Once you have covered the concealer, leave it to “bake” for 5-10 minutes.

4. Following the baking process (leaving the powder on our skin for 5 minutes), take a fluffy brush and dust off the excess powder. Finish off the remaining contouring and make-up, and we are done!

This process is time consuming and requires a heavier hand with the make-up, therefore it isn’t recommended as a daily routine. It is, however, perfect for those special days and to get that stunning selfie, giving you a pore-less look. Try it out for yourself and let us know how your pictures turn out!
